Default Fashion Forecasting

Fashion forecasting is something that makes a good designer stand out amidst huge crowds and if your innovative ideas catch the public eye then you have made your life. A Fashion Designer is a very creative person whose flight of imagination makes him conceive new designs of clothing and accessories. Fashion designers create designs for almost anything which is a part of the garment for men, women and children. Designers create garments and accessories so as to make them functional as well as attractive. Fashion designers not only design but also supervise the workroom staff. The job is high-paced and requires a lot of running around for market research and then making mental notes connected to the future trends which no doubt requires technical expertise.

Fashion Designers main concerns are clients needs, which obviously are influenced by trends, market predictions and the climate. The Indian market in some attires fellows the western markets. The designer needs to keep a close track. Size, fitting, style, colour, texture and material are al! designers concern. Fashion designers design outer and inner garments and accessories to go with them. The process begins with sketching the original idea on paper. Then shaping the pattern pieces which make the garment.

The pieces are then drawn in actual size on paper and cut out on a rough material. These pieces are stitched together and fitted on a model. Modifications in the pattern pieces or other features of the mock-up are made and thus the design is completed. From the rough model sample garments are made in the final fabric.

Much time of the designer is spent in exploration and research. Knowledge about fabric, weave, draping qualities, material, colour and design and changing trends is important.

Although it may sound quite simple but fashion designing is indeed a very challenging field. It is definitely not a one-man show, it calls for perfect coordination because fabrics are to be chosen, information pertaining to changing trends is to be sought and new designs are to be created and put on the paper in the form of sketches. Although, at times, at a small level all this could, no doubt, be a one-mans show, in big organisations specialised jobs are allotted to different people.
In a nutshell, a designer requires the ability to create, visualize and, most important, communicate his ideas. Like in every other field, making yourself understood is the most important factor for being successful. Therefore, besides knowing your job, you should also know what the public prefers, what makes people respond positively, how to interact and make a name for yourself or, in other words, know your buyers and their demands. Remember, this is a never-ending process — one has to be on ones toes all the time. Now, if you really have it in you, it is time to rise and shine.

Job Positions
Changing styles of clothes give a boost to the Indian textile and fashion industry. Indias heritage in exotic fabric design, costumes and handicrafts has significantly added to the existing potential for a more creative approach to growth in this field. At present there is a lot of scope for designers in India and they have a tremendous potential for growth.

Fashion designers find employment with textile manufacturers, garment export houses, garment manufacturers, fashion show organizers and trade fair authorities. In the industry you will meet people who are designers, merchandising and marketing personnel, manufacturers and fashion coordinators besides, of course, fashion stylists. Let us have a look at the entries into this profession.

Designers, at times, specialise in one or two areas such as womens wear, mens wear, childrens wear, or even jewellery designing. Designers at junior levels often find jobs with manufacturers who produce low range garments. Slowly and steadily with experience they are engaged by manufacturers who design a higher range.

Fashion designing is a creative field that involves conceiving innovative ideas and designs. A fashion designer creates garments, textiles, handbags, shoes, belts and even jewellery. At times, the entire collection is purely traditional and at others it is a blend of different cultures. Fabrics are chosen, new colour schemes are introduced after a thorough market survey which involves getting information on various aspects, public interest, new trends, that may be a modified version of the bygone trends (for example, look of the seventies in the nineties) or an absolutely new collection that breaks traditions and introduces brand new trends that transform our entire life-style.

During a discussion with some designers, one aspect came to light. In India a lot of real talent goes waste because of lack of foresight on the part of these aspiring designers. Instead of joining a professional designer just after passing out they decide to join export houses. Joining an export house is not wrong but real talent requires a variety of experience. A guide should not only recognize talent but also give it the right direction whereas in an export house, especially in India, export orders are made according to specifications of buyers and there is hardly any creativity involved, thereby reducing the designer to the position of a fashion coordinator who just looks after manufacture and quality of garments.

Essential attributes of a Fashion Designer
Fashion designing is seen as a glamorous profession by most young people. The glamour is skin deep as this profession needs an intense desire to create and a drive for perfection. While perfect drawing skills may not be essential, if you dont know how to draw, if you are not able to sketch designs out on paper, you may have to forget about fashion designing. There is no need to be a genius at art, but you must be able to sketch things out clearly and precisely, to show a design to your pattern cutter. Figures and descriptive text on pieces of paper may not be needed, but you will need to sketch your design with the colours you want for the final design. You will have to do that for the client to be, show him the design youre trying to sell.

To sum up, you must be:
- Artistic, creative and possess the ability to translate your ideas in sketches.

- Proficient at combining colours, shades and tones. Visual imagination is essential.

- Ability to anticipate market requirements and understand customer life-style. Selling, skills in persuading and influencing are required.

- Self-confidence, ambition and determination will contribute to your success as a designer.

Self-employed and free-lance designers require business acumen. There is no dearth of options once you have acquired the technical know-how and have an inherent sense of creativity.
